Thunderbirds win streak hits double digits
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The Soo Thunderbirds saw Darian Pilon tally twice and set-up another while seeing their air-tight defence stymie the Elliot Lake Wildcats in a 6-0 victory Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Essar Centre.
The one-side decision was the 10th win in a row for the soaring Thunderbirds, who now have a NOJHL-high 30 points with their 15-1-0-0 overall record. The loss sent the Wildcats mark to 10-4-3-0.
Sault Ste. Marie took control of the contest by notching three goals in the opening period on markers by Zach Senecal, Matt Pinder and a Matthew Caruso man advantage effort.
It was more T-Birds in the middle frame as Pilon struck shorthanded at 12:46 and then supplied his second of the stanza six minutes later to increase the cushion to 5-0 after two.
Jaren Bellini’s eighth of the season 4:24 into the third capped off the scoring for the winners.
Thunderbirds captain Brett Jeffries dished out two assists to chip in offensively for his side
Nathan Warren made 20 saves to register his second shutout on the campaign.
Allan Menary started for Elliot Lake and suffered the defeat allowing three against on 12 shots in 16 and a half minutes of work, before giving way to Aaron Mackay the rest of the way.
Mackay handled 18 of 21 in a lengthy relief stint.
